Every Tuesday afternoon, the SECC Hub fills with voices.
There are people of all ages, and from all walks of life, warming up, working through harmonies, and laughing over a missed note.
That’s the SECC Community Choir, and it’s open to anyone.
Who’s behind the choir?
Maree Butler leads the choir as a volunteer. She’s a vocal coach and performer with over 30 years’ experience, a Mo Award winner, and part of the teaching team at Singing.com.au in Botany. Her stage credits include Neon Nights, MUSAIC, Totally Aussie 80s and the Bat Out of Hell Meatloaf Show, and she performs as a core vocalist with The Australian Shania Twain Show.

Outside the studio, Maree gives her Tuesdays to SECC. She’s built a reputation for helping people manage performance anxiety and find confidence in their voice. And that’s exactly the spirit she brings to the choir: no auditions, no pressure, just a room full of people learning to sing together.
What to expect
The choir welcomes adults of any singing level, from complete beginners to people who’ve sung for years. You don’t need to read music. You don’t need a “good” voice. You need an hour on a Tuesday and a willingness to have a go.
Sessions run from 1 to 2 pm at the SECC Hub, 1007 Botany Road, Mascot. It’s $5 a session, or $30 for the full term, and places are limited to 30 people.
Choir members also get the chance to perform at SECC events through the year, including Christmas in July.
Who it’s for
The choir is open to residents of Bayside, Randwick, City of Sydney, Woollahra and Waverley.
Why it matters
For a lot of people, the choir isn’t really about the singing. It’s the one hour a week where they leave the house, see familiar faces and belong to something. That’s the quiet work SECC’s volunteers do week after week, and Maree makes it happen.
