Looking for ways to get creative while stuck at home? Sophia Morris offers five simple ideas to brighten up your week.

1. Enjoy movies and TV shows

Are there films or TV shows you’ve always meant to watch? You could choose a classic show like The Sopranos, watch a series like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, or check out Oscar winners from the past few years. SBS On Demand and Netflix also have a great range of movies from around the world. You could pick a film from a different country every week. And if you have a library card, you should have access to free streaming services like Kanopy and Beamafilm. You could also use Netflix Party to watch with a friend. The Chrome extension lets you sync up your streaming and chat while watching together.

2. Get gardening

Whether you have a backyard, a balcony or just a windowsill, you can grow herbs or vegetables at home. You don’t even need to buy a pot, grab any old container that you’re not using anymore. Many plant stores or nurseries offer online delivery, and this ABC Life article shows you how to grow your own plants from cuttings.

3. Cook up a storm

We’re all cooking more now, so why not learn some basic kitchen skills. Bon appétit has some great videos that break down how to cut different foods correctly, along with a useful collection of tips for home cooks. Meanwhile, SBS Food has their recipes sorted by cuisine, so you could try cooking something from countries around the world.

4. Get into crafts

I’ve been enjoying making basic birthday cards for family members, and painting fruits with (socially distant) friends. There are so many ways to get creative with paints and pencils. There are heaps of adult colouring books out there, with many free to download and print, while apps such as Colorfy let you colour on your phone or tablet. You could try learning to draw with the help of YouTube tutorials, or use Bluprint, which offers online classes on a range of crafts and has made them all free until April 16.

5. Make a photo album

You may have old photos that you’ve never done anything with. Now could be the time to organise them in an album. You could also go through an old digital camera or your phone, and choose photos that you want to get printed. Why not try making a photo book online with Snapfish or another program?

Enjoy! – Sophia
