South Eastern Community Connect (SECC) hosted a Locals Picnic and Open Air Family Movie on Saturday 10th November to celebrate 40 years of serving the local community.

The event was supported and funded by major sponsors Crown Group and its subsidiary Eastlakes Shopping Centre.

Running from 2pm to 9pm in the park adjacent to the shopping centre, Eastlakes Reserve, the event was designed to include a variety of engaging activities for all ages.

South Eastern Community Connect considers the event a huge success, attracting close to 700 people from the local community across the seven hours it operated.

Community participants included Bayside Council Libraries with their outdoor lawn library, police officers from the Local Area Command, local councillors Christina Curry, Scott Morrissey and Dorothy Rapsiardi, and local MPs Ron Hoenig and Matt Thistlethwaite.

Entertainment was also provided by students of Gardeners Road Public School and JJ Cahill Memorial High School in Mascot.

The afternoon Dog Show was sponsored by Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists and supported by Maggie’s Rescue and Delta Society Australia.

A coffee cart was donated by Laing+Simmons, Rosebery, and Michael Leader donated his time as MC.

A total of 13 staff and a host of volunteers contributed their time to help run the event.

Urban gardening sessions and community art workshops were also on the program, along with a sausage sizzle throughout the day; free Yoga and Tai Chi workshops; children’s area with games and activities run by SECC’s Family Services team; and a mood-boosting drumming workshop led by Deputy CEO Ashleigh Daines.

The event concluded with the open-air family movie Sherlock Gnomes as the sun went down. Close to 150 people were in attendance for the movie.
