Volunteer Clinical Board Member

Location: Sydney, NSW (Eastlakes/Mascot / hybrid)

Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

Commitment: ~10 hours per month (monthly Board meetings + committee work)

 

About SECC

South Eastern Community Connect (SECC) is a not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to enhancing wellbeing and social inclusion through a range of services and programs across Sydney’s south-east. The Board is the organisation’s highest governing body and ensures ethical, strategic and accountable leadership.

 

Role Overview

As a Volunteer Clinical Board Member, you will provide clinical governance leadership and contribute your clinical expertise to SECC’s strategic direction, ensuring its services are effective, safe, evidence-informed, and responsive to the needs of vulnerable community members. This role supports the organisation’s mission and strengthens its capacity to oversee clinical and wellbeing-related services.

 

Key Responsibilities

Governance & Leadership

  • Provide clinical insight to strategic planning, ensuring health and wellbeing priorities are embedded into organisational strategy.
  • Contribute to governance oversight in accordance with best practice clinical and ethical standards.
  • Support SECC in meeting legal, regulatory and quality compliance for all services, especially those with clinical components.
  • Monitor organisational performance including outcomes and impact of wellbeing-focused programs.

Board Participation

  • Prepare for and actively participate in monthly Board meetings and relevant committee meetings.
  • Contribute constructively to Board deliberations and decision-making.
  • Chair or be a member of Board sub-committees as required.

Clinical Risk & Quality

  • Provide oversight on clinical risk, quality improvement, client safety and risk management frameworks.
  • Advocate for continuous improvements in service quality, cultural safety, and client-centred practices.
  • Ensure clinical governance frameworks align with current best practice and legal requirements. (clinical specificity adapted from governance principles common to Board roles).

External Representation

  • Act as a spokesperson and ambassador for SECC in clinical policy, community health forums, and stakeholder engagements when requested.
  • Support relationship-building with clinical, government, and community partners.

Organisational Support

  • Assist in recruiting and mentoring future Board members with clinical or health-related expertise.
  • Support fundraising and resource development activities for clinical and wellbeing programs.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Professional clinical experience in health, allied health, public health, nursing, psychology, clinical governance or related field.
  • Understanding of governance principles, clinical risk, safety and quality frameworks.
  • Experience contributing to strategic decision-making in complex environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative leadership skills.
  • Commitment to SECC’s mission and the principles of equity, inclusion and community wellbeing.

Desirable

  • Experience in non-profit board service or governance training.
  • Demonstrated advocacy in community health or social support sectors.
  • Knowledge of Australian clinical governance frameworks and/or community service delivery.

Time Commitment & Meetings

  • Attend approximately 10 hours per month, including monthly Board meetings (typically 2 hours; in person or remote) and relevant committee meetings or organisational events.
