Established in 1917, Mascot RSL sub-Branch was one of the first of its kind in Sydney. For over 100 years, the members of this tight knit group have continued to volunteer and dedicate their valuable time to serving and maintaining close ties with the local community.
Convened by retired Naval officer and Mascot resident, Rachael Cosgrove-White, the group is committed to collaborating and working with other charities to foster cohesion across community. Over the past year, this has included supporting SECC’s Youth Drop-In program with delicious afternoon school snacks and meals.
“One week it may be pizza, the next chicken and chips. Either way, the teenagers thoroughly enjoy the feed, and ice cream is always welcome,” explains SECC Community Hub Manager, Mike Hawthorne.
Every Wednesday afternoon from 3-5pm, approximately 50 high school students from Randwick, Mascot and surroundings suburbs visit SECC to participate in a range of activities led by their interests and hobbies.
With youth workers from SECC and 3 Bridges always on hand to provide guidance, the weekly Youth Zone allows young people to build rapport with community workers who provide opportunities to help them thrive but also help them navigate any challenges they face.
At the Mascot RSL sub-Branch, which includes over 40 members with the average age 67 years, this program resonates strongly, as establishing and maintaining social connections is a vital part of Rachael’s role:
“Both organisations share similar values, so it was a well-aligned partnership from the beginning.”
“We often hear of playgroups spending time with seniors in aged care facilities, so this is another form of that cross generational partnership.” says Rachael.
“It’s vital for our membership to continue serving the community, which is what we have all signed up to do. For many of us we see it as our civic duty and it contributes to our veterans’ wellbeing knowing they are helping to make a positive difference,” explains Rachael.
Thanks to Mascot RSL sub-Branch for your important contribution towards supporting young people in our community.
