South Eastern Community Connect has received a grant of AUD 8,000 to run free fitness classes using the new outdoor gym at Eastlakes Reserve. “Doing it Differently” is a grant program of Bayside Council and South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.

“Outdoor gyms are a fantastic way to get fit and into shape. There are no membership fees, no contracts, you can exercise in fresh air and any time you want,” says Ashleigh Daines, Deputy CEO of South Eastern Community Connect.

“The only barrier for many people is that they don’t really know how to use the equipment, and nobody wants to embarrass themselves, or worse, injure themselves”, she explains.

“We are going to run fitness classes using the equipment with a professional instructor who can show us how to use the machines safely and for best results,” Asleigh says.

Bayside Council installed a brand new outdoor gym at Eastlakes Reserve in 2017.

Showing people how to use the machines can increase health and wellbeing in the community and increase the use of the park and its amenities in general.

“We are aiming to start classes in time for your spring shape up, so keep an eye on our website or facebook page for the exact dates”, says Ashleigh.

One of the goals of “Doing it Differently” is to support the people of Bayside to build healthy, strong, connected and inclusive communities.
